The UKIE has declared Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as the best selling video in the UK across all formats for 2011, reports Videogamer.
This is the third year in a row that an Activision game has been featured at the top of the list. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops topped the list in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
Meanwhile, Electronics Arts also had a big year, with its FIFA 12 being named as the second best selling video game in the UK. EA's Battlefield 3 came in third, but was the second best selling first person shooter game behind MW3.
"In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK's boxed-product games market," stated UKIE CEO Jo Twist.
"However, whilst the boxed product market still remains a key revenue stream, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market. UKIE's Digital Charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues," he added.
Meanwhile, gaming studio 505's Zumba Fitness came in fourth while The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim finished in fifth place.
