According to a recent post from the iPhone Dev Team, the newly released untethered iOS 5 jailbreak solution, for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners wanting to enhance the capabilities of their devices, is being downloaded at a staggering rate.
The benevolent hackers reported on their blog that the Absinthe jailbreak had achieved 953,232 downloads within three and a bit days. Just over half (491,325) of people downloading this tool were iPhone 4S owners who hadn't jailbroken their devices so far; 308,967 of users who downloaded Absinthe were new iPad 2 jailbreakers, while 152,940 of Absinthe downloaders were iPad 2 owners who had used a jailbreak solution before. The accuracy of figures is ensured by Cydia's method of tracking queries.
The Dev Team dropped the numbers to show Absinthe's success, but they also don't want their users (or those soon to be users) to forget a crucial piece of advice: "Remember the cardinal rule of jailbreaking: never update your firmware until a new jailbreak is available. This is especially true for A5 owners, who currently have no way of restoring to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 SHSH blob signing window is closed."
