It was assumed by analysts that the technology pioneer is going to sell 6.6 million Apple TV set-top boxes in 2009 and launch a full blown TV set. But, after witnessing that Apple was still selling fewer than 3 million units a year, analysts had to scale down their expectations. Apple had been in conversation with a major TV component supplier regarding various capabilities of their television display components.
Apple was investing heavily in manufacturing facilities to build 50 inch LCD screens. Beyond that the company was working on various prototypes of the much talked about next-generation television.
Analysts are confident that Apple is determined to enter the so called connected TV market, and currently targeting a late 2012 launch.
The iPhone maker can simply facilitate its television to manage a consumer's live TV service from within a unified interface similar to what TiVo does by using its existing agreement with MSOs. Another option for the company could be to avoid the cost and effort of entering the live TV services business and simply pair up with MSOs to deliver live cable TV to the Apple Television.
The fruit themed technology giant is soon going to create a revolutionary wave in the TV market with this innovation - at least that's what fanboys from all over the world are hoping for.
