Allowing Proview to use iPad Brand Name will Harm Consumers, Apple Says

Apple has expressed that permitting Proview International Holdings Ltd. to manufacture products under the brand name "iPad" will eventually hurt consumers. At present, Apple is engaged in a battle with Proview over the ownership of "iPad" trademark for their flagship tablet device in China.

During a recent hearing at the Higher People's Court of Guangdong in southern China, Apple lawyers stated that minimum three Proview employees from their Shenzhen unit took part in a negotiation which finally culminated in sell of iPad trademark to the U.S. company.

One of the lawyers stated that, "Consumers in China have come to associate this trademark with Apple's tablet computer."

He added further, "Allowing Proview to use the brand to make their own products would cause confusion and harm consumer interests." reported San Francisco Chronicle.

In the month of November, a lower Chinese court ruled that Proview's Shenzhen unit is the owner of the iPad trademark. Apple filed an appeal against this ruling and Apple made the above statements at the first hearing of that appeal.

In case, Apple loses this lawsuit then the company will be exposed to a number on suits claiming damages and also sale of iPad might be banned in China which happens to be the largest market outside U.S. for Apple.
