Apple Launches The New iPad Tablet

Cupertino based maker of the iPhone has unveiled at a San Francisco event, the new iPad - with a high resolution display, quad core graphics performance and a better camera, than seen before.

The new tablet from Apple, called just the iPad, has a 9.7-inch Retina screen, with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 - and 3.1 million pixels in total, the highest ever seen in a mobile device.

Apple mentioned at the event that the third generation iPad has 1million pixels more than an HDTV, which comes in at 1,920 x 1,080.

To put the new screen in context, it has 264 pixels per inch and with a 44 per cent better colour saturation, than the iPad 2.

Running the iPad is the A5X processor, with quad core graphics. Apple has compared the A5X to the Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset, where the company has noted that the A5X offers four times the performance of the Tegra 3 - with double the performance of the A5.

On the rear of the device is the 5 megapixel iSight camera, with a backside illuminate sensor, a 5 element lens, a hybrid IR filter and an Apple designed ISP - the same one included in the iPhone 4S.

This does offer up 1080p video recording, with video stabilisation, temporal noise reduction, all of which is ideal for capturing media and playing it back on the Retina display.

There is also built in voice diction, with its icon located at the bottom of the virtual keyboard; supported on the iPad is dictation in US English, British, Australian, French, German and Japanese.

Connectivity in the iPad has been increased, with support for 21Mbps, dual carrier HSDPA at 42Mbps - with 4G LTE capabilities too, at 73Mbps. There is a new hotspots feature on the iPad, but only if the mobile phone network backs it.

Apple's new tablet boasts a 10 hour battery life, or 9, on 4G, whilst measuring just 9.4mm thin and weighing in at 1.4lbs.

In the USA, the cost comes in at $499 for the 16GB version, 32GB is priced at $599 with $699 for the 64GB model. This rises to $629, $729 and $829, for the 4G models, respectively.

We expect UK prices to be released soon.
