Marvell has just unveiled its latest third-generation SATA controller, the Marvell 88SS9187.
It features a 6Gb/s SATA Revision 3.1 compliant host interface, which is optimised for solid-state drives, replete with “game changing” benefits, the company boasts.
The controller offers a maximum sequential read performance for a SATA 6G device, and Marvell claims that it manages 500Mb/s of sequential write performance even at dirty drive conditions.
A “ground-breaking” correction capability is promised, along with best-in-class random read and write IOPS, with minimum over-provisioning and minimal performance degradation.
Alongside high performance levels, the technology also brings industry-beating standby power consumption rates to the table, making it suitable for the Ultrabook market, too.
Alan Armstrong, VP of Marketing for the Storage Business Group at Marvell, commented: “The best-in-class, open architecture of the device allows SSD manufacturers to fully customize their products to meet specific customer demands and distinguish their products based on price, performance, power and functionality. Marvell is thrilled to be leading the industry with our advanced SSD acceleration technology, which is enabling our partners to take their products to the next level.”
The SSD controller is set to be deployed by a few major SSD manufacturers immediately, with additional parties coming on board later in 2012.
