It looks like the sudden price drop of the Apple iPad 2 following the launch of the New iPad has finally convinced Android tablet manufacturers to drop their prices as well or risk losing even more marketshare to Apple.
Amazon is now selling the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet for only £279, a 30 per cent discount off its SRP of £400 for what is essentially a smaller and more portable version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
As such, there's a 8.9-inch 1,280 by 800 pixels capacitive PLS display, a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 system on chip, 1GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a 3-megapixel rear camera with flash and a front facing 2.0 megapixel shooter, a 6100mAh battery, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and runs on Android 3.1 Honeycomb with Samsung's Touchwiz user interface.
The tablet - which is only 8.6mm thick and weighs a mere 465g - comes preinstalled with Google default services as well as Polaris Office.
Since last week we've noted a number of significant price cuts that brought some more popular tablets near or under £300. These include the Motorola XOOM, the Sony Tablet S1 and the Apple iPad 2. Note that the Galaxy 8.9 is also available from Currys for the same price.
