The number of smartphones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to rise significantly in the second quarter of 2012 according to unnamed industry sources quoted by Digitimes
HTC, Samsung Electronics, Motorola, LG and Sony Mobile Communications are all expected to update their existing devices or release new ones that will be powered by Google's latest mobile platform over the next few months.
Of interest is that the sources claim that ICS will even run on the Qualcomm MSM7227a or the MediaTek "MT6565" (Mediatek has no MT6565 system on chip in its portfolio so we guess that it could be the MT6573) which are both entry level solutions.
Android 4.0 currently accounts for only 1.6 per cent of the market according to Android itself which is four times less than the number of Android devices running Android 2.1 Eclair. The marketshare is dominated by Android 2.3 Gingerbread (62 per cent) and Froyo (25.3 per cent).
Currently, the new HTC One range, the Sony Xperia, the new LG Optimus range, the Asus Transformer prime tablet and a few other devices (including the Ainol Novo) come with Ice Cream Sandwich.
