Amazon is reportedly developing the next generation of e-readers to allow users to read in the dark. TechCrunch's Devin Coldewey, who works just down the street from Amazon's mysterious Lab 126, managed to take a sneak peek at a next generation Kindle prototype.
He found out that the new Kindle models will have front lit displays. Moreover, the project is in its final stages and we should prepare for a release soon.
"They've finally gotten it to the point where it's ready to be released, and a new generation of glowing Kindles will be coming our way sometime this year,"writes Coldewey.
The most noticeable feature of the Kindle prototype was the screen which seems to glow in the dark. The display also adapts to shady environments and the slight illumination makes the reading more comfortable for the eyes.
"At full blast it was definitely projecting some light (technically speaking it was reflecting it), but it was still a soft glow and not the harsh flashlight of a backlit LCD," describes Coldewey his finding.
The light was rather cool, with a bluish-white shade, more appropriate for the grey tint of the e-ink.
