Apple's long rumoured "iPad mini" that's kept us guessing for quite some time is no longer a wild prediction. Analysts agree that Apple will release such a product and the only mystery remaining is its potential release date.
Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu wrote (opens in new tab) about Apple testing various tablet sizes since August 2009. At the time, officials from Cupertino were experimenting with devices ranging from 4 inch to 12 inches.
Now, the most quoted rumour on this matter is that Apple is working on a 7.85-inch iPad. Consequently, Shaw Wu wrote earlier this week in a note to investors that the "iPad mini" is a "question of when, not if." We believe it will be launched in Q3 of this year.
Wu thinks that this device will be "the competition's worst nightmare." Apple will deploy an aggressive strategy to bite off an even bigger chunk of the tablet market with a more affordable device.
Amazon's Kindle Fire is selling at a loss (opens in new tab) with its $199 price tag. Even so, Wu suggests that the device has "a modest success." Google also plans a $250 tablet with a 7-inch display.
