Samsung and Visa have announced today that the Galaxy S3 will be the official phone for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The handset was announced last week at an event in London and has already gone on preorder with the first handsets expected to be delivered on the 30th of May.
To mark the event, there will be a special edition device with Visa's mobile payment application, Visa payWave, which will be made available only to Samsung and Visa sponsored atheletes and trialists.
The S3, which the company keeps calling "Samsung's Olympic Games phone for the London 2012 Games" comes with NFC capabilities and will be compatible with more than 140,000 contactless terminals spread across the country.
S3 Users will only have to activate the app on their smartphone and swipe the phone on a contactless payment terminal for the transaction to take place. Transactions over £20 will require a pin and the app will also allow users to check their purchase history and their account balance.
It's worth noting that the Acer Iconia A510 is the official tablet for the Olympics rather than any of the S3's stablemates (Galaxy Tab etc).
