Toshiba has rolled out the first of three Android-based tablets in the US; the Excite 10 will go on sale on Toshiba's website and on Amazon for $449.99 (around £280) for the 16GB model. 32GB and 64GB versions will cost $529.99 (around £330) and $649.99 (around £400) which means that it would probably be a better bet to upgrade the tablet's storage using a memory card.
The tablet comes with a quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, Bluetooth 3.0, a five megapixel camera at the back and a two-megapixel in the front. The 10.1in Groilla Glass covered display has a screen resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels and the tablet is said to have a battery life of 10 hours.
As for the two other models, this one runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The two other models will ship on the 10th of June.
The market though has become extremely competitive with the launch of a $399 Apple iPad 2 tablet earlier this year, one that makes even a quad core Android tablet a tough sell.
Other rival Android tablet within this price range include the new Asus Transformer TF300, the Acer Iconia A510 series, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Motorola XOOM 2 and Lenovo's Ideapad range.
