IT security firm NCC Group has announced the launch of DDoS Assured, a new product that aims to combat distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS). DDoSs are the world's most common cyber attacks, and function by overwhelming a site's servers with a crippling amount of requests, either shutting it down or severely slowing it.
These sorts of attacks, which have in the past affected the likes of Microsoft, CNN and Change.org, among many others, can be damaging in both the short- and long-term. Even popular P2P The Pirate Bay was hit by a DDoS only a few days ago.
DDoS Assured is a simulation service that allows IT security personnel to test their site's response to DDoS attacks in a controlled environment and then tailor their protection strategies accordingly. The service targets application layer attacks, which NCC claims are responsible for more than 85 per cent of DDoS attacks.
"A fully tested mitigation service will minimise any downtime as well as reassure risk managers that they have reduced the potential impact of a cyber attack", said NCC Group technical director Paul Vlissidis in a statement.
