Multinational tech behemoth IBM has completed its latest acquisition, buying Vivisimo, a Pennsylvania based computing firm specialising in discovery and navigation software.
The purchase heralds the IT giant's latest expansion, with this move bolstering its data analytics portfolio. The deal was recently finalised for an undisclosed amount.
Vivisimo's software - which is expected to continue selling under its existing branding - optimises the discovery of big data regardless of format or location, collating it into a federated, single-view setup ideal for decision makers looking for quick access to key information to help inform strategic initiatives.
The company is expected to integrate into IBM's existing big data platform, with its 120 existing worldwide employees joining Armonk's specialist software wing.
As part of the deal, IBM will look to gain immediate access to Vivisimo's prestigious client list, which features Airbus, Bupa, and Proctor & Gamble alongside a range of government contracts including the Navy and Air Force arms of the U.S. military.
An IBM manager was keen to emphasise the importance his company places on realising the "game changing" possibilities of big data and helping clients to utilise the findings to "unlock their full potential."
"[The] acquisition of Vivisimo will help clients to uncover new data and combine it with existing information assets for analysis that leads to smarter business decisions. No other vendor provides this depth and breadth of information management and analytics," said Arvind Krishna, a general manager in the Information Management wing of the IBM Software Group.
Business intelligence experts IDC estimate the niche market for big data services is a serious growth industry, predicting an annual rise of nearly 40 per cent and a total industry value of over £10 billion.
With its broad based portfolio including software, hardware, services, and innovations, many observers consider IBM to be in an ideal position to capitalise on this opportunity.
