Amazon is selling the 256GB Samsung solid state drive (the 830 SSD) for £145, making it the cheapest model on the market. It comes with free Norton Ghost 15 and an accessory than converts your hard disk drive into an external one.
Given that a full copy of Norton Ghost 15 costs £44 on its own, it's fair to say that this deal is a pretty decent one, especially as you can also grab Norton 360 v6 for £25. It comes in a 2.5in form factor with a SATA 6Gbps interface, Samsung Magician software for SSD management, random reads of up to 80,000 IOPS and sequential reads of 520MB/s, random writes of up to 36000 IOPS and sequential writes of up to 400MBps and a three year warranty.
Samsung uses an all-in-house solution comprising of Toggle DDR NAND flash using a 20nm process (and capable of data transfer rates of up to 133Mbps), a 3-core ARM9-based MCX controller and 256MB DDR2 DRAM Cache memory.
Given that the 64GB model costs £67.09 at Amazon and the 128GB £95, adding a mere £50 extra doubles the amount of memory on offer which explains why the Samsung SSD 830 is currently the best selling SSD on Amazon.
Oddly enough, Samsung chose to promote its SSD (and other storage-related products) using three different personae - Brutus, Fiona & Larry - to illustrate the various situations that an IT user may face. This post has been sponsored by Samsung Electronics but the company didn't have any influence on the editorial content.
