Sony to unleash one last PS3 console update at Gamescom?

Sony is likely to unveil a new iteration of its popular PlayStation 3 console at the German game event, Gamescom, in Cologne in August.

According to documents unearthed by Japanese website Pocket news from the Federal Communications Commission in the US, Sony will release a new PS3 gaming console called the CECH-4001x with more than one version (possibly with different hard disk capacity announced).

A diagram shows how the purported gaming console compares to the PS3 Slim and the original PS3 fat version. The PS3 Slim is already nearly three years old - it was announced at Gamescom 2009 - and was a third smaller, a third lighter and consumed a third less power than the fat version. The new version is likely to be equally smaller, lighter and power efficient compared to the PS3 Slim.

{MPU Placeholder}Having another iteration will allow Sony to reduce the bill of manufacture, improve its margins or possibly have a price cut.The cheapest PS3 we've found cost £160 from Salisbury's but expect to pay close to £180 now.

It will be interesting to see whether the new console borrows any functionality from the Sony Playstation Vita portable gaming console.
