The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play remains one of the more interesting smartphones to be launched over the last few years when Sony Ericsson (now Sony Mobile) pinned its hopes on the phone being a game changer – literally.
Unfortunately, it seems that the mobile gaming market thought otherwise and the Xperia Play, which came with a bang, now fading away with a whimper. Phones4U is selling the handset for £135 plus a £10 top-up either on T-Mobile or Orange.
The device comes with a single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor clocked at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage and a microSD card slot. There’s a 4in 854 x 480 pixels display, a 5-megapixel rear camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Timescape UI.
Its unique feature though is the slide-out gamepad with PSP buttons. The phone was the first one to get a Playstation certification but perhaps because it lacks a front-facing camera, will not get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Another Sony handset, the Xperia U, costs the same but comes with a much faster dual-core processor and a much smaller form factor plus it will be upgradable to ICS.
