HTC Proto smartphone to be unveiled at IFA?

Could the HTC Proto be the new mainstream smartphone from HTC? Well, at least one report thinks so.

A picture of the phone - whose final commercial name has yet to be announced - has been published by The Verge and shows a fairly unexciting handset with a Beats Audio logo and what appears to be a distinctive 'chin'.

The phone could be available at the upcoming IFA event in Berlin, where Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 2 at an Unpacked event.

The Proto is said to have a 4in 800 x 480 pixel display, a dual-core Snapdragon system-on-chip clocked at 1GHz, a 5-megapixel camera, a chassis that’s less than 10mm thick and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Those specifications are similar to the single-core HTC One V (which we suspect it will replace) and quite similar to the Sony Xperia U which has a smaller display.

One likely reason why HTC wants to replace the HTC One V so quickly is because it offers very poor value for money. It costs at least £210 in the UK - that's 60 per cent more than what the Sony Xperia U costs.

Desire worked at ITProPortal right at the beginning and was instrumental in turning it into the leading publication we all know and love today. He then moved on to be the Editor of TechRadarPro - a position he still holds - and has recently been reunited with ITProPortal since Future Publishing's acquisition of Net Communities.
