HP Proliant N40L Microserver available from £104

Never before has a brand new server from a global brand cost so little. The HP Proliant N40L can now be had for as little as £104 from Serverdirect (with free delivery) after a massive £100 cashback from HP.

The server uses an AMD dual-core processor commonly found in laptops, the Turion II Neo, clocked at 1.5GHz with 2MB L2 cache. It comes with a 250GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, a Gigabit Ethernet port, six USB ports, VGA, a 150W PSU and an ultra-micro tower chassis with a lockable door.

The Proliant N40L works perfectly as a starter server either for businesses or for the DIY connoisseur. It can accommodate up to five hard disk drives internally with RAID 0/1 support, up to 8GB of ECC RAM, PCI-e cards and a wide range of Windows and Linux based operating systems.

At a 22 dBA noise level, it is quiet for a working environment or even as a decent size media server. Indeed, that server could be used as a discrete office PC although you would need to install your own OS.

Its predecessor, the N36L, was a favourite among those looking to run Windows Home Server 2011. Details of how to claim the cashback for the N40L can be found here.
