Vodafone stockpiling 500,000 iPhone 5 Nano SIM cards

Vodafone has confirmed that it will be stocking half a million nano-SIM cards as it ramps up to the launch of the iPhone 5 (and possibly other iDevices) which is expected to be unveiled later today.

The nano-SIM is 40 per cent smaller than the micro-SIM used by the iPhone and according to Vodafone is so slim and tiny that you will only be able to handle them with tweezers.

Unfortunately, it also appears that you won’t be able to convert your existing full size/micro SIM into a nano-SIM for at least two reasons.

Firstly, contact pins on current SIM cards are too big to use a nano punch and the current cards are 12 per cent thicker than the nano-SIM which means that they might not even fit in even if they’re cut to shape.

ITProPortal will be reporting live on Apple’s announcement later tonight so make sure you stick with us and bookmark our live blog as we find out more about the new products and services launched by the tech giant.

Other than the iPhone 5, we expect to see a cheaper version of the iPhone 4S, an iPad mini and potentially a 13in Macbook Pro with Retina Display.
