Samsung’s cheapest Ultrabook is incidentally the cheapest model of its kind in the UK. The Series 5 Ultra 530U4B costs as little as £555.55 (including delivery) at Ballicom and is a laptop which qualifies for the current Samsung student cashback scheme which gives back £100.
To keep prices that low though, Samsung has had to make compromises, the biggest of which is the use of a 500GB hard disk drive coupled with 16GB flash storage rather than a solid state drive.
The second compromise is the use of an Intel Core i3 2367M processor, one that is clocked only at 1.4GHz and comes with 3MB L2 cache. The last is the choice of a 14in display rather than the usual 13.3in.
The rest of the system configuration is similar to other entry level Ultrabooks. The 530U4B uses Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, comes with 6GB of RAM, a 1,366 x 768 resolution, GbE, a 6-cell battery, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a HDMI one, a card reader, a front facing camera and a design reminiscent of the Apple MacBook Air.
Samsung claims that the laptop can wake up in two seconds and has a battery life of up to 6.5 hours.
