Normally one can expect to get a cheap multi-function inkjet printer for around £25 but these are likely to have high running costs, especially if you don’t print in colour often.
Step in the Ricoh Aficio SP 100SU multi-function printer which is the cheapest laser MFP we’ve seen on the market so far at £59.99 from Ebuyer (including free delivery).
The device is described as an entry-level 'network workgroup' laser printer but it doesn’t have an Ethernet port or wireless capability. It can reach up to 13 pages per minutes with the first page out in 10 seconds and can print at 600 x 600 dpi thanks to the onboard 181MHz processor and 16MB memory.
Other features include a maximum power consumption of 70W and a standby power consumption as low as 5W, a 50-sheet input capacity, a 5,000 page monthly duty cycle and a USB port.
It can also act as a stand-alone scanner with a 600 x 600dpi resolution and a scanning time of less than eight seconds for colour material. It can also be connected to a Windows-based computer (sorry, no Linux or Mac operating systems) for scanning duties.
As expected, there are no fancy card readers or LCD screens at this price range. It’s also worth noting that the footprint is equivalent to just over an A3 sheet. Note, though, that the cost of consumables is likely to be high.
