Sony Xperia U smartphone now available for under £100

Unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year, the Sony Xperia U smartphone can now be purchased for as little as £99.90 on PAYG from Carphone Warehouse’s subsidiary, E2Save. The refurbished phone is almost certainly unlocked and unbranded and includes an initial £10 top up on Vodafone.

The device sports a dual-core STE U8500 SoC clocked at 1GHz, and comes with 512MB of RAM in addition to 4GB of on-board storage, but unfortunately no microSD card slot. The Xperia U also features a 3.5in touch-screen display with an 854 x 480 pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a front-facing VGA snapper, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. An upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has been promised. .

Other features include a rare LED transparent strip, the Xperia’s Timescape interface, HD video recording, FM radio, access to the Sony Entertainment Network, and a claimed (3G talk-time) battery life of over 5 hours.

At just over 110 grams and with dimensions of 112 x 54 x 12mm, it is one of the lightest and smallest dual-core smartphones on the market. The phone has since been replaced by the Sony Xperia Sola which adds a microSD card slot, has a more expansive screen, and is currently in the process of getting an ICS update.
