Price of Samsung Series 5 Chromebook falls under £200

The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook can now be had for under £200, after a £50 cashback from Samsung and a £50 price cut to its original retail price (you can get the Chromebook from John Lewis for a mere £249.95).

The offer is valid until 31 October 2012 on Series 5 and Series 5 550 Chromebooks which makes this Chromebook the cheapest we’ve seen on the market. It comes with an Intel Atom N570 dual-core processor clocked at 1.66GHz and runs Google Chrome OS.

There’s also 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, a 12.1in 1,280 x 800 pixels display, an Intel GMA3150 graphics subsystem, GbE port, up to eight hours battery life, a 4-in-1 memory slot, two USB ports, Wi-Fi and a 2-year guarantee included as standard. However, the lack of Bluetooth and HDMI out might put off some customers.

At 1.47kg and with a thickness of only 19.9mm, it falls squarely in the ultrabook category as far as physical specifications are concerned.

The latest price cuts mean that either old Chromebooks are on the way out (with new versions coming up soon) or, more likely, that Google may have decided that this form factor has lost the battle against tablets…for now.
