There was a time, not too long ago, when getting a system with more than four processors running concurrently would have cost you as much as a brand new car.
Yet nowadays, you can grab a 6-core processor like the AMD FX-6100 Black Edition from Aria for just under £80. The chip – which is built on the Bulldozer architecture - is unlocked which makes it perfect for overclocking and it comes in a retail box complete with a stock heatsink fan.
It is clocked at 3.3GHz and can overclock by default to up to 3.9GHz. There’s also 14MB combined L2 and L3 cache, support for DDR3-1866 RAM, a three year warranty and a 95W TDP thanks to a 32nm manufacturing process.
Having multi-core processors is particularly important to applications like video-editing or 3D modelling support that are extremely resource-hungry and very often support multi-tasking.
Unfortunately, Intel processors are likely to have the upper hand for poorly optimized and/or on single-threaded applications in general.
