Meet the Series 5 UltraBook from Samsung, one which is set to feature prominently as a mainstream model from the Korean manufacturer for months to come.
The Series 5 NP-530U3C, available for £600 at Currys, is powered by an Intel Core i3-3217U processor, one which is clocked at 1.8GHz and has 3MB cache. It has 6GB of RAM, more than most other UltraBooks, a 24GB SSD, a 500GB hard disk drive, Intel HD 4000 graphics unit, a 13.3in 1,366 x 768 LED display, a card slot, three USB ports, GbE, Wi-Fi, VGA, HDMI, a webcam, a 4-cell battery, up to seven hours battery life, a fast start technology that allows boot times of only 11 seconds.
Note that Samsung has refrained from using a glossy display, opting for an anti-reflective 300nit one that’s hopefully immune to finger prints. The UltraBook comes bundled with Office Starter 2010, Intel Anti-Theft and Identity Protection technology.
Samsung has also included an interesting BatteryLife Plus feature which apparently limits the laptop battery’s ageing process. At 1.52Kg and with a maximum thickness of 18mm, the Series 5 cuts a decidedly average figure.
