The most formidable rival to the iPad mini and the Google Nexus 7, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, is available from Tesco Direct for only £149 compared to £159 at Amazon. You will have to collect the tablet in-store and use the voucher code TD-MXTN at check out.
Like the Nexus 7, the Kindle Fire HD brings some serious competition to the existing small form factor Android tablet market and threatens to take over that price-sensitive segment.
The tablet is a significant upgrade from the original Kindle Fire. It comes with a dual-core TI OMAP4460 system-on-chip clocked at 1.2GHz paired with a PowerVR SGX GPU plus 1GB of RAM, 16GB onboard storage, a 7in 1,280 x 800 pixel IPS display, dual antenna Wi-Fi, access to 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, books and magazines, a front-facing HD camera, an HDMI port, Dolby Digital Audio technology with two dual-driver speakers, up to 11 hours of battery life, a new Silk browser, Bluetooth and a USB port.
At a thickness of 11.4mm and a weight of 413g, the Kindle Fire HD is both chunkier and heavier than the iPad Mini tablet's 10.3mm and 395g, but at almost half the price is a potential bargain. Note that the tablet runs a customised Android OS.
