Competition at the lower end of the printing market is cut-throat and we are on the verge of seeing printers being given away for free when purchased with consumables.
Box, for example, is selling the Ricoh Aficio SP1210N laser printer for only £44.98 on eBay, with 44 Nectar points and free delivery. This printer should be more than adequate for a small business setup, as it comes with an Ethernet port and can print up to 22 pages per minute.
It has a very compact footprint and even comes with a USB port. Other features include a warm-up time of 18 seconds and a first print speed of 10 seconds. It is powered by a 181Mhz processor and has 16GB onboard memory and a default printing resolution of 2,400 x 600 dpi.
The SP1210N runs PCL6 printer language and supports the IPV6 network protocol but is compatible with the Windows environment only, which will leave Linux and Mac users in the dark.
The printer can be bought alongside a 1,000-sheet starter kit with a standard toner running for 2,600 pages, costing £60.
The imaging drum, which has to be replaced every 12000 pages, costs a staggering £122.35, almost three times the price of the printer itself.
