Twitter has announced that it has now reached 200 million unique monthly users.
The popular social network tweeted the milestone today, saying "there are now more than 200M monthly active twitter users. You are the pulse of the planet. We're grateful for your ongoing support!"
The figure shows that the number of users of the site has increased by 60 million since its last milestone of 140 million active monthly users, which Twitter announced on its sixth birthday in March this year.
Although the social network is still way off reaching Facebook's one billion user mark, the news confirms Twitter's place as one of the biggest players in social media.
Even a cursory look back at 2012 shows that the site is increasing in importance, now taking in governments and world events as well as celebrities and amateur foodies - the Vatican recently attracted a great degree of attention to the social network when the Pope set up an official Twitter account.
There is also the small matter of the ongoing drama between Twitter and Facebook. Recently, it was revealed that Twitter offered over £300 million for the popular app Instagram, despite previous denials made by the photo service's CEO, Kevin Systrom.
