Samsung certainly can't be accused of lacking ambition heading into 2013, with the latest reports indicating that it will launch new connected TV hardware and the "Smart Hub" user interface at CES, the world's largest consumer electronics trade show, which commences on 8 January.
Describing Smart Hub as a "unique platform" for its connected televisions, Samsung said that the updated UI design would enhance ease-of-access and user enjoyment by dividing content into five sections.
"In 2013, users can look to Smart Hub for a more intuitive experience with various contents, live TV broadcasts, VOD, apps, internet and such. All this content will be available on one screen divided into five sections, each holding a spot for a different category," the company wrote on its blog.
According to the information provided, the 'On TV' section will cover live TV, while 'Movies & TV Shows' will house on-demand content. The 'Apps' category is largely self-explanatory, while 'Social' will enable streamlined content sharing, and 'Photos, Videos & Music' will store personal content.
Based on the limited Smart Hub screenshots (see photo, top) currently available, the new content portal appears to feature a tile-based interface akin to Microsoft's Windows 8 layout.
Accompanying the revamped layout is a new 'Flipping' feature, which will allow users to browse through up to five screens at once using a motion control function intended to mimic the ease and enjoyment of "flipping through the pages of a book," according to Samsung, who didn't expand on the technology behind the new capability.
"2013 Smart Hub will be able to provide the variety of owning five TVs just with one device. [This will] provide more convenience to the user experience of smart contents such as live TV or apps," commented Seonwoo Lee, vice-president of Samsung's Media Strategy Marketing Team.
In addition to launching Smart Hub and teasing a new connected TV, Samsung is rumoured to be unveiling two flexible displays at the 2013 iteration of the world-famous Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month.
