Reports from the US claim that Microsoft has acquired home technology startup id8 Group R2 Studios, though financial details of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
R2 Studios has been attracting attention for its development of home automation software for mobile devices and it is thought the acquisition will enhance the future capabilities of Microsoft’s Xbox platform. The Wall Street Journal broke news of the buyout, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The startup was created by Blake Krikorian, founder of Sling Media who are responsible for the TV streaming device, the Slingbox. At R2 Studios, Krikorian has overseen the launch of an Android application that allows users to control heating and lighting systems from their smartphone.
Though the company is far from a household name, it had reportedly been the subject of interest from tech heavyweights Apple and Google as well as Microsoft, with manufacturers seeking to build new intelligent assistant features into products.
