CES 2013: MSI unleashes power and portability with new laptops

MSI may not be the biggest name among PC manufacturers, but the boutique PC maker will definitely be drawing attention this year with two new systems that bookend the wide array of PCs it offers. On the high-end is the immensely powerful GT60 Quadro Workstation, while the light and thin Slider S20 is as portable as the other is powerful. Whether you need to chew through complex renderings or just want to take Windows on the go, MSI has plenty to offer shoppers.

The Quadro Workstation isn't for everyone, because few people need this much raw power in one portable machine. But, for those engineers, animators, graphic designers, and programmers out there that need the unbridled power offered by an Intel Core i7-3630QM quad-core processor and an Nvidia Quadro K2000M discrete GPU, then look no further than the MSI GT60 0NG-294US. Selling for $2,099 (£1,304), the GT60 Quadro Workstation supports more than 150 professional applications, including Adobe CS6, Avid Media Composer, Autodesk Inventor, Siemens NX, and PTC Creo.

Outfitted with a 15.6in 1920x1080 resolution display, 750GB hard drive, and 12GB of RAM, this workstation should be able to handle even the most intense computing tasks without breaking a sweat. For those who want to go bigger, the GT60 Quadro supports up to four independent displays, and supports features indispensable to graphics professionals, like sRGB standard for high fidelity colour renderings, Nvidia's scalable geometry engine, fast 3D texture transfer, and hardware 3D window clipping for faster rendering.

For an entirely different sort of versatility, MSI has also announced the extremely portable Slider S20 Ultrabook Convertible. The 11in convertible ultrabook has a sliding display that lets you switch between an ultrabook with keyboard and a lightweight tablet PC. The 11in IPS panel display offers 1920x1080 resolution, joined by THX TruStudio Pro for high quality sound. The slim tablet measures only 0.78in thick, and weighs a scant 1.18kg , making it one of the more portable hybrid ultrabooks available.

Thanks to an Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, you'll have Windows 8 available to go anywhere. With a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and offering uncompromised connectivity—it's equipped with USB 3.0, HDMI output, wired Ethernet, and 802.11n Wi-Fi—the Slider S20 will be swift and speedy whether it's brand new or several months old. When it becomes available early this year, the Slider S20 Ultrabook Convertible will sell for $1,200 (£745).
