£90 HP Proliant N40L Microserver; the cheapest PC in the UK

We’ve covered the HP Proliant N40L a few times in the past, the company’s best-selling MicroServer, and right now you can buy it from for a mere £189.99, a price that drops to £89.99 when you claim £100 cashback from the manufacturer (check out all the details and the application form here, note that the offer is valid until 28 February).

The server, which is part of HP’s “Just Right It” solution for SMB and carries the part number 658553-421, runs on an AMD Turion II Neo clocked at 1.5GHz with 2MB L2 cache and two cores.

There’s also 2GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB), a 250GB hard disk drive, shared video memory, one PCI Express slot, GbE, a one year warranty, SATA Storage controller, VGA port, eight USB connectors, three 3.5in free bays.

Arguably, at this price, it doesn’t come with any operating system, keyboard, mouse or monitors. You should be able to kit it out with 8GB of RAM for around £40, up its onboard storage to a massive 12TB for around £400 and add Windows Home Server 2011 for less than £40.

In the end, the Proliant N40L would be transformed into a nimble but capable fully-kitted microserver with tons of storage for less than £600.
