Head over to Kikatek to purchase Microsoft’s Windows Home Server 2011 (64-bit version) for £34.73 with free delivery. You can get it for even less (£32.99 at Ebuyer) but delivery is extra. The price of this operating system almost always hovers around £40.
The operating system has been a hit with system builders and enthusiasts in general because it combines a very low cost with some features only found in full server OS. A particularly popular pairing was WHS 2011 with the HP Proliant N40L microserver, both of which could be had for well under £135 once cash back was applied.
We will be investigating the capabilities of Windows Home Server 2011 soon as a desktop operating system and as an alternative to Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 which costs twice the price of WHS 2011.
The operating system has now been replaced by (the much more expensive) Windows Server 2012 Essentials which costs more than £280.
