Unannounced Acer Liquid Z2 smartphone goes on sale ahead of probable MWC 2013 launch

UK supermarket giant Asda has put the Acer Liquid Z2 smartphone on sale for a mere £89. The handset is unlocked, unbranded and in stock; what’s surprising about it is that it hasn’t been officially launched by the Taiwanese company and can’t be found on Acer’s UK website.

That’s right, this handset hasn’t been released yet and we suspect that it is one of the few devices that Acer will unveil at Mobile World Congress in a few weeks’ time. Indeed even Asda’s spec page mention that the phone will be released on 28 February.

The device reminds us of the current range of Acer Liquid smartphones (like the Liquid Glow or the Gallant Duo). It is powered by a single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7227-A SoC clocked at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM, a 3.5in display, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, a microSD card slot and a talk-time of four hours.

Whether this smartphone will get our seal of approval depends on a number of factors that have yet to be published: the display resolution, the amount of onboard storage and the camera resolution.

Sub-£100 smartphones that rival the Liquid Z2 include the ZTE Blade III, the super cheap Alcatel One Touch OT983 and, if you don’t mind a refurbished handset, the Sony Xperia U.

Desire worked at ITProPortal right at the beginning and was instrumental in turning it into the leading publication we all know and love today. He then moved on to be the Editor of TechRadarPro - a position he still holds - and has recently been reunited with ITProPortal since Future Publishing's acquisition of Net Communities.
