£179 Asus FonePad giant smartphone to land on 26 April

Carphone Warehouse, Amazon and Sainsburys will start selling the Asus Fonepad phablet from 26 April according to a report from Techradar.

That will coincide with the day the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone starts to ship nationwide.

The FonePad which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year will go on sale for £179 and is likely to be a popular product because of the sheer amount of functionality it crams.

The Asus FonePad (not to be mistook for the Padfone or the MeMO pad), is similar in shape and size to its illustrious sibling, the Google Nexus 7 but sports a different processor, pack voice capabilities (and 3G functionality) and a microSD card slot.

Inside the FonePad (which Asus calles the ME 317 MG) is a dual-core, Atom Z2420 processor clocked at 1.2GHz with a PowerVR SGX540GPU.

There’s also 16GB onboard storage, a front facing 1.2-megapixel camera, a 7in 1,280 x 800 pixel IPS display, 1GB of RAM, an Intel model, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 4,270mAh battery, a multi-tasking helper and a number of Asus-only application.
