£1000 Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Metal: A powerful laptop with some serious oomph

Laptopsdirect is selling the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Metal laptop for £1000 with an optional three year warranty on parts and labour adding another £100 to it. The laptop which is the top-of-the-range “prosumer” workstation from Lenovo packs some exceptional firepower at this price.

It runs an Intel Core i7 3632QM processor which is one of the fastest mobile processors on the planet. It has four cores clocked at 2.4GHz which can turbo clock to 3.2GHz plus features 6MB cache.

Other notable features include an aluminium chassis with a red colour scheme, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB drive spinning at 5400RPM, a Blu-ray reader, a 16GB SSD (which acts as a cache), a dedicated Nvidia Geforce GT650M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and a 15.6in 1,920 x 1,080 pixel display.

The rest of the spec sheet is made up of a card reader, a 1-megapixel webcam, up to three hours battery life (with a 6-battery cell), Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, Windows 8, GbE NIC, four USB ports, HDMI/VGA ones, and two 1.5W JBL speakers. As expected the device is massive. It weighs more than 2.7Kg and is 36mm thick at its thickest.
