Although processing power has increased a lot on the desktop and workstation side, you will still fail to find many devices that can handle more than 16GB of RAM. Which is where servers such as the HP ProLiant DL585 rack server comes in without the price tag. The one we sourced on eBay from server specialist Bargain Hardware costs only £550 and comes with 550 Nectar points.
The server comes with four AMD Opteron quad-core processors, the socket-F 8356, which are clocked at 2.3GHz and support AMD-V technology. There’s also 64GB DDR2 PC2-5300P 667MHz ECC RAM (32 x 2GB with no DIMM sockets free), eight PCI-X or PCI-express slots, eight 2.5in SAS or SATA drive bays, an HP Smart Array P400/512MB PCIe SAS/SATA RAID Controller with BBWC, two redundant power supplies, two GbE NIC ports (Dual embedded NC371i Multi-function Gigabit Server Adapters with TOE and support iSCSI) and a DVD drive.
As a cautionary note, this chassis may be stickered as a DL585 G2, however it features an identical motherboard and specification to the G5 and supports quad-core processors (the G2 doesn’t).
