Tumblr bolsters mobile arsenal with Windows Phone 8 app launch, iOS update

Things have certainly been busy on the Tumblr mobile front of late.

In the last couple of days, Tumblr has launched an app for Windows Phone 8 and updated its iOS app with some new sharing options and other goodies. This all comes after Tumblr introduced ads into its mobile feed.

On the iOS front, the latest version of the Tumblr app for iPhone and iPad now lets you share blog posts to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. You can also save blog posts for later using services like Instapaper and Pocket, or email an entire post using a "beautiful new template," Tumblr wrote in a blog post.

The update also brings some new navigation changes, like the ability to swipe up or down to close photos, and search your Following list, which is now alphabetised. Because GIFs are the hottest thing on the Internet these days, they will now animate as you scroll. Note that support for scrolling animated GIFs is only available on the iPad 2, 3, and 4; iPad mini; iPod touch 5th Generation; iPhone 4S and 5.

Meanwhile, the new Tumblr for Windows Phone 8 app (screenshots pictured, top) lets you post "just about anything from just about anywhere — pictures, quotes, music, videos, chats, links, and your random musings," according to a recent post on Microsoft's Windows Phone blog. The Windows Phone 8 app also has full GIF support, and works with speech recognition so you can use your voice to dictate posts.

The Tumblr for iOS update is available for download in the App Store now. Tumblr for Windows Phone 8 can be downloaded from the Windows Phone store.
