£300 HP Proliant DL585 server: 64GB of RAM and 8-core Opteron

If you need a server or a big box, then head over to eBay and pay a visit to bargain hardware, a popular server retailer. The shop is currently offering a HP Proliant DL585 4U rack server from as little as £300 including free delivery and 300 Nectar points.

These are ex-corporate items that have been removed from a fully working environment and because of their price and bulk, they do not come with any warranty other than DOA (which essentially says that it will work when you switch it on).

As for the specs of the DL585, they are rather impressive (although the system is a few years old). You get four dual-core AMD Opteron 850 processors clocked at 2.4GHz (Bargain Hardware offers a free upgrade to 2.6GHz for the first three buyers).

There’s also 64GB ECC DDR RAM, a Smart Array 6i SCSI RAID Controller with 64MB of RAM, four 3.5in SCSI U320 Drive bays, an optical drive, two hot plug 870W redundant power supply units, two GbE ports managed by an embedded NC7782 PCI-X adaptor, four USB ports, eight expansion slots (all PCI-X), two PS2 ports, VGA and ILO ones.

If you need something beefier, it’s worth looking at the DL585 G5 from the same seller but with 16 Opteron cores.
