Acer Iconia B1 tablet down to £79 thanks to £20 cashback offer

The Acer Iconia B1 tablet can now be purchased from Ebuyer for as little as £79 after a £20 cashback offer that expires on 31 May. The tablet was unveiled at CES earlier this year and was the first model from a top manufacturer to break the £100 barrier.

It remains a poor man’s Google Nexus 7 rather than a real rival but does provide an interesting alternative to slightly more affordable but limited eBook readers.

The Iconia B1 runs on a dual-core Mediatek system-on-chip clocked at 1.2GHz and based on the Cortex-A9 architecture, there’s also 512MB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, a 7in display with a 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution, a VGA front-facing camera, a microUSB and a microSD card slot, a lonely speaker at the back and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Amongst other notable features are a 2,710mAh battery that can power the tablet for up to five hours, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Wi-Fi and a weight of only 320g. Is it a worthy purchase?

Almost certainly yes given that Samsung’s own Galaxy Tab 2 costs nearly twice the price and adds only a few improvements.

Other competitors in the arena include the newly released Lenovo IdeaTab A3000 and the Google Nexus 7.
