Asus MeMo Pad tablet launches in the UK

Asus may, for once, have a loser after the success of its Vivobook range, the Transformer family and the Nexus 7 tablet. For we cannot see how the Asus Memo Pad ME172V tablet will succeed against the slew of compelling rivals already available or coming to the market soon. Carphone Warehouse has put it on sale for £129.

Let’s take a look at the hardware. The ME172V is powered by a single-core VIA WM8950 SoC clocked at 1GHz with 1GB of RAM and 16GB onbaord storage. There’s a microSD card slot, a 7in 1,024 x 600 pixel display, a 16Whr battery that can power the tablet for up to seven hours, a front facing camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Launched four months ago, it incorporates a number of Asus-only features like Floating apps which are always on top of other apps. That can include movies or a web browser. Also on the feature list are the Asus SonicMaster Audio, the Maxx Audio software and the SuperNote lite.

As for the competition, we will pick up only two of them. The Acer Iconia B1 which is a dual-core model and sports roughly the same specification and is on sale for a mere £79, a 39 per cent discount. A slightly more expensive model is the Lenovo IdeaTab A3000-H which is not only a quad-core model but also offers 3G functionality.
