£3,000 Lenovo Thinkserver RD630 server: 12 Intel Xeon cores, 256GB of RAM and SSD all along

You will have to head over to a US-based retailer on eBay, computerupgradeking, to purchase the crème of the crème from Lenovo's server range.

The Chinese manufacturer is better known for its laptops and desktop range after it acquired IBM's computer portfolio years ago. It does however have a pretty impressive range of enterprise-grade servers as well though illustrated by this Thinkserver RD630.

The latter – which is new rather than refurbished - is on sale for around £3,000, a price that includes delivery and 2,848 Nectar points.

It is a highly scalable, 2U rackmounted server that comes with two Intel Xeon E5-2620 processors. These pack six cores each, 15MB L2 cache and a TDP of 95W. They are clocked at 2GHz with a turbo boost of 2.5GHz.

Other features include 256GB of RAM (that's 16 16GB DDR3 1600MHz memory modules), four 120GB Samsung 840SSD (although we'd prefer to have one 500GB model), a DVD writer, six USB ports, two VGA ones, two redundant 800W power supply units, two Gigabit Ethernet connectors (Intel i350 Phys) and a massive three year warranty.

There's also a ThinkServer RAID 700 adapter that offers hardware SAS/SATA, supports RAID 0/1/5/10/6/50/60 and has 512MB cache.
