Is £170 Acer CloudMobile S500 smartphone the best value-for-money handset in the UK?

Expansys has cut the price of the Acer CloudMobile S500 to £170, making it one of the best value-for-money smartphones in the UK. Note that It is available in white only.

It is a pretty powerful piece of technology that differs from the likes of the Google Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S3 only through the amount of storage and the onboard system-on-chip. Both carry retail prices nearer to £300.

The CloudMobile S500 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC which has two cores and is clocked at 1.5GHz. There's also a 4.3in 1,280 x 720 pixel IPS display that uses a ZAG technology (Zero Air Gap) to minimize reflection, 1GB of RAM, 8GB onboard storage, a rear 8-megapixel camera, a front facing VGA one, Bluetooth 4.0, AGPS, Wi-Fi, NFC, a microSD card slot and full HD video recording.

Acer also bundled in free AcerCloud services (hence the name) and everything runs on a slightly customized version of Android 4.0 ICS. All in all, the only weaknesses we could point to are the battery (1,450mAh) and the low amount of onboard storage, something which can be easily remedied with a microSDHC card (you can grab 32GB for around £16).
