Samsung UE55F8000 preview: quad-core TV

In January at the CES fair Samsung launched a new line of high-end televisions, and many of them are now available in stores. The F8000 series succeeds last year's ES8000 models, and ranges in size from 40in all the way up to 75in. The F8000 has an entirely new base, but the most important improvements are less visible. Samsung has equipped its new high-end TV with a completely new Smart TV platform that runs on a very fast engine. "Finally a TV that understands you," according to the Korean manufacturer. Today we take a closer look at what the F8000 has to offer.

The Samsung F8000 series are LCD televisions with dynamic edge LED backlight. It is Samsung's best panel and best engine. When you look at the product pages of the F8000 TVs on Samsung's site, you'll see that Samsung spends very little time on the picture quality, and instead emphasises all of the product features. These come courtesy of a very powerful quad-core ARM processor that's supposed to improve the Smart TV experience. The Smart TV menu has been entirely overhauled as well.

Samsung has upgraded the processing power of its entire 2013 line-up. The lower-positioned models have dual-core processors, and the 7000 and 8000 series run on a quad-core chip. The extra power is also supposed to improve the other Samsung features such as gesture control and voice control. In our review of last year's UE55ES8000 you can read that, while those features were already present, there was still room for improvement in terms of responsiveness and accuracy. The quad-core processor is supposed to address these issues, and we'll find out whether Samsung was successful.

The 8000 series is Samsung's flagship product line, which means the pricing is accordingly. The smallest model that's 40in costs an average of £1,450, and the 55in model we tested costs around £2,500, just like last year's UE55ES8000. And if a 74in TV is more up your alley, then you should plan on spending about £7,000. Let's find out whether the new line can justify those prices.
