Carphone Warehouse is currently selling the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 phablet for a mere £32 per month on a two year contract on Orange with unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB data. That's a total cost of ownership of £768. Add £2 per month and you get unlimited data and tethering from Three networks although you do lose both the unlimited minutes and data bundle. The phone will be available for delivery from 1 July.
At 6.3in with a 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution, the Mega 6.3 is one of a growing breed of smartphones (or phablets) with a display size bigger than 6in. The biggest of them all remains the Asus FonePad with a whopping 7in display, something that puts it on the same level as the Google Nexus 7. Two other recently announced phablets include the Huawei Ascend Mate and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
The Mega 6.3 actually shares a lot of features with the Galaxy S4 Mini starting with the system-on-chip, a dual-core model clocked at 1.7GHz. Other similarities include 1.5GB of RAM, a card reader, an 8-megapixel camera and 8GB onboard storage.
As expected the new generation of Galaxy smartphones have a few tricks in common like Group Play, S Translator and Air View.
