Laptop specialists Laptopsdirect is currently selling the Acer TravelMate B113-E laptop (also known as the NX.V7PEK.006) for £279.92 (including delivery), a price that excludes a £40 cashback from Acer direct as well as a £15 rebate when you trial Which? Magazine subscription for £1. The net outlay for that laptop falls to £226, which is a more than decent price for what it offers.
There are more powerful laptops available at that price but what sets the B113-E apart is its small form factor. It comes with an 11.6in display with a 1,366 x 768 pixel display, a dual-core Intel Pentium B113 processor, one clocked at 1.5GHz with a 2MB cache, 4GB of RAM shared partly with the onboard Intel HD Graphics module, a 320GB hard disk drive, Windows 8, a card reader, a 2,500mAh 4-cell battery that can power the laptop for up to 252 minutes, Bluetooth 4.0, a Gigabit Ethernet port, Wi-Fi, HDMI and three USB 2.0 ports.
The laptop is 27.4mm thick which is thicker than most Ultrabooks but weighs a mere 1.38Kg. We'd definitely like to see more of these on the market around the same price as the gap between lightweight Netbooks and traditional, entry level notebooks is closed.
