Lenovo is powering ahead with some interesting, if unspectacular designs for its laptops. The IdeaPad Z500 laptop is one of them. It is not an Ultrabook but it is 25 per cent thinner than a standard notebook according to Lenovo's PR team. It is not that cheap at £460 but that is still a third off its SRP of £700.
As for the list of components that's hidden in the chassis, it is very good value for the price. A dual-core Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 2.6GHz (the i5-3230M), with 6GB of RAM, a massive 1TB hard disk drive, a DVD writer, an Nvidia Geforce GT740 GPU with 1GB of RAM, a 62Whr battery and Windows 8.
Other features include an AccuType keyboard, an intelligent touchpad, Veriface face-recognition technology, 5GB cloud storage on Lenovo Cloud, Lenovo Energy Management 7.0, Dolby Home Theater v4, a 15.6in display with a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution, HDMI and what Lenovo describes as a "tactile soft-touch exterior". Ahem.
