Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy Gear watch to cost £299 in the UK

British customers are going to feel fleeced one more after it emerged that the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch will carry a suggested retail price of £299; US customers will be charged $299. That’s twice that of the Sony Smartwatch 2 and roughly what the Samsung Galaxy S3 costs. Retailer Phones4U let the price slipped in a press release it sent about the Galaxy Note 3.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear watch launched earlier today during the second episode of the Samsung Unpacked event held in the imposing Tempodrome building in Berlin and has been hailed by JK Shin, Samsung’s CEO, as an enabler of “smart freedom”.

The device runs on what looks like a customized/locked down version of Android. It is powered by a “customized” single-core system-on-chip clocked at 800MHz, has 512MB of RAM, 4GB onboard storage, a 1.9 megapixel camera, an array of sensors, a 1.63in Super AMOLED touchscreen display with a 320 x 320 pixel resolution (a pixel density of 277ppi), Bluetooth 4.0, voice-aware features, an array of applications plus a 315mAh battery.

On paper, the Gear is as powerful as the first generation Samsung Galaxy Ace. The watch, which will be available in a number of hues, will also allow users to answer calls simply by putting the watch strap close to the user’s mouth (bringing a new sense to the term, talking to the hand).
