Grand Theft Auto V leaks just ahead of Tuesday release

Rockstar is investigating an unfortunate situation for the company – but a welcome problem for antsy gamers – whereby copies of its much anticipated Grand Theft Auto V game have managed to leak out prior to the title's official release date.

Don't hold your breath, however, if you think that an autumn Father Christmas is going to somehow sneak you the loot a day early. The leak appears to be confined to just those who pre-ordered from Amazon UK, and it's unclear just how many gamers managed to score the title before its Tuesday street date – and what permutation of shipping options or other unknown variables allowed them to shoot their friends a few days earlier than others.

Representatives from Rockstar, in a note to GamesIndustry International, have confirmed the leak.

"We are in the process of investigating early 'sales' to determine how and why that is occurring," read a statement by said unknown Rockstar reps.

Of course, one only need run a cursory search on Twitter or Instagram for GTA V leaks to verify that, yes, a number of gamers are getting an early crack at the game's sprawling world of Los Santos — one that's reported to be larger than the worlds of Rockstar's three other major titles (Grand Theft Auto 4, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Red Dead Redemption) combined.

A quick search of eBay doesn't appear to reveal anyone who is attempting to make a quick buck on their early-release copy of the game; we had half-expected to see bidding for an early copy of GTA V hit the £100 mark or so, given gamers' likely obsession with the title.

Analysts have predicted that Grand Theft Auto V could push up to 20 million copies by March of next year, helped in part by the fact that a significantly higher number of gamers own Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 consoles now versus when Rockstar's predecessor title, Grand Theft Auto 4, was released back in 2008.

Just to put that figure into perspective, GTA IV only pushed out around 13 million units or so in its first nine months. In less time than that, it's certainly possible that Grand Theft Auto V could head off to the races – and perhaps even become the year's best-selling title.

If all this GTA-talk is just too much for you to bear, you can also completely spoil yourself by reading all the recaps of those who already have access to the title at the official Grand Theft Auto V Reddit. Good luck with the final leg of your wait!
